Week 5: Shredding Plastics

This week Jasmine and I  utilized a power tool to shred a bottle of Powerade. We both need polyethylene terephthalate to continue our research projects. The process was very entertaining yet tiring. Jasmin and I hope to obtain about 4 grams of polyethylene terephthalate by next week. Although this power tool is a definite upgrade from a cheese grater that Jasmine had to use the last semester, it still requires time and effort. We shredded about 1/5 of a gram of microplastics in about 25 minutes. Which is not too bad, and hopefully we can finish shredding most of the plastic on Friday.

  1. First off, I wanna say your picture is SO COOL. You and Jasmine look like two bad ass women. I wish I was there to witness you (or jasmine?) with the power tool because it really looks entertaining. How did you manage to shred the bottle using a cheese grater? I wonder how long that took haha. I am much curious to know what the polyethylene terephthalate is going to be used for.

  2. Love the edit you did to the photo, looks extremely cooler & better than the original one. Anyways thank you so much for the help on the shredding of micro plastic definitely shredding more micro plastic than I ever did within 6 months. I'm sure if we put enough hours in together we could most definitely come up with enough microplastic for your project and as well as my project. Looking forward to shredding more plastic with you on Friday.

  3. Hey Maricruz! I'm also gonna start off by commenting on your picture, it does look really cool. It reminds me of something you'd see in an art museum. Very abstract. cx I'm glad you guys aren't using a cheese grater anymore though! That sounds like such painstaking work. It's great that you guys are working so hard on your project.
